Modification of natural dye extracts from roselle and cochineal for solid dye-sensitized solar cells
Natural extracts of Roselle and Carminic acid were modified by adding metal ions such as Zn2+,Al3+, Cu2+, Sn2+ and Sn4+. A gray precipitate was obtained when Sn2+ was added to red rosell extract solution and a pink precipitate was obtained when Sn2+ or Sn4+ was added to orange carminic acid solution. Both precipitates do not dissolve in methanol, ethanol, iso propanol, acetone, acetonitrile, ethylacetate, dichloromethane, chloroform, hexane. This may indicate formation of metal-dye complexes which are under further investigation. The color precipitates were used as sensitizer for the solid dyesensitized solar cells and the efficiency of the cells were tested. It was found that the energy conversion efficiency of the modified dyes were slightly higher than that of natural dyes.
