Determination of the attenuation coefficient and Half Value Layer from the gamma-ray absorbers.
The measurement of total linear attenuation coefficient from gamma-ray absorbers made from plastic sheets, copper sheets, brass sheets, aluminum sheets, stainless steel sheets and lead sheets, with thickness ranged from 0.10 ± 0.05 cm were carried out. The radioactivity sources in different gamma-ray energies, Co-57 (130keV), Ba-133 (360keV), Cs-137 (662keV), Mn-54 (810keV), Na-22 (1280keV) and Co-60 (1,170 and 1,330 keV) were used. The absorbers were irradiated by each of gamma-ray sources and the transmission radiation were measured using NaI(Tl) Ludlum Model 44-10 detector. The linear attenuation coefficient from samples was used for calculation of the Half Value Layer (HVL) to assess the radiation hazard when using these samples for gamma-ray absorbers. The results showed that lead sheets had the minimum HVL in each gamma-ray energy. Therefore,it is the best gamma-ray absorber.
