Rotoscoping is an animation technique used to give photos a cartoon-like appearance like. This is similar to the technique used in movies like “Waking Life” and “A Scanner Darkly”. There are some free software programs providing the rotoscoping function like “Rotoscope” [1] which allows user to render 2D cartoon images from videos. The quality of rendered images is similar to cartoon images drawn by the cartoon artists. However, this program seems suited to only professional artists, because the artist must specify some feature edges in the input picture and the program will automatically render the rest of the picture. In other words, Rotoscope requires user-defined data, image features, for rendering cartoon image. As mentioned, this project proposes a program allowing user to semi-automatically render high quality cartoon animation. The proposed program allows any end user to easily render 2-D cartoon animation and to save the production cost. In addition, this program is designed to run on Linux operating system, an open source and free operating system, compatible with several servers. Moreover, this Linux compatible server program can be extended for real time rendering or even distributed on cluster.
