Effect of pretreatment with salinity on drought tolerance in rice seedings
Effect of pretreatment with salinity on drought tolerance and some physiological characteristics wereexamined in rice seedlings cv. Khao Dawk Mali 105 which is moderately salt-tolerance . Rice seedling were germinated and grown in soil for 25 days. The seedling were then categorized into 4 groups including control which was watered continuously for 12 days, Drought which was watered continuously for 5 days and withholding water for 7 days, pretreatment with 20 mM NaCl solution for 5 days and withholding water for7 days ,and pretreatment with 50 mM NaCl solution for 5 days and witholding water for 7 days respectively. The results showed that drought treatment caused reduction in fresh and dry weights, but were relieved in 20 mM pretreatment.Fresh and dry weights of 50 mM pretreatment were also decreased by drought. Shoot and root lengths was reduced by drought in all treatment. Relative water content of droughted seedlings was lower compared to the control plants, but increased in 20mM pretreatment. Total sugar increased when the seedlings were exposed to drought. Pretreatment with 20 mM NaCl caused a reduction in total sugar.Sucrose and fructose accumulations were observed in all treatment. Starch content of drought seedlings was lower compared to the control plants, but increased in 20 mM pretreatment. In addition, the activity of sucrose phosphate syntase, acidic invertase and alkali invertase of drought seedlings was lower compared to the control plants, but increased in 20 mM pretreatment. It is,therefore, concluded that drought causes reduction in plant growth, but pretreatment with 20 mM NaCl can relieve the effects.
