A guided star-shaped trajectory of spiral waves
The dynamics of the spiral wave rotating in a thin layer of the light sensitive Belosov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction are controlled by a time-dependent uniform illumination. To guide a spiral wave, the process begins with a negative feedback control to induce a drift of the spiral wave core towards the center of the domain. After a rigidly rotation of spiral wave is stabilized, the domain is shifted, with a given step and loop time, along a guiding direction (e.g. a star-shaped path). Once the domain is shifted, the spiral rotation adjusts itself to a new stable point, i.e. the current location of the domain center. As a result, a sequence of the shifting the domain along a star-shaped path can guide the spiral wave to move along the selected trajectory. The increase of the shift step and/or shift velocity results in a deviation of the spiral core from the star-shaped path. These experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations.
