Effect of clay on Abrasion resistance of Carbon black-filled natural rubber
Carbon black-filled natural rubber (NR)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by meltcompounding method. Effect of clay loading on abrasion resistance and other mechanical properties was determined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to determine the distribution of clay in rubber matrix by measuring the interlayer distance of clay galleries. The XRD pattern showed that the more clay loadings, the less interlayer distance. Cure time (t90) and scorch time (t2) of the NR/carbon black/nanoclay hybrids were less than those of NR/carbon black compounds. Thus, nanoclay behaved as an effective accelerator for NR vulcanization. DIN Abrasion resistance, tensile strength, modulus, and hardness of NR/carbon black/clay nanocomposite having various clay loadings were similar to those of NR/carbon black composites. This could be due to bad adhesion between NR and clay. Thus, silanes will be used as a compatibilizer to improve the interaction between NR and clay. Experiment in this part is underinvestigation.
