Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-1) in Siamese Crocodile Blood (Crocodylus siamensis)
Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-1) is synthesized in the liver upon stimulation by growth hormone and involved in cell replication, proliferation, protein synthesis, carbohydrate homeostasis, and bone metabolism. IGF-1 can be found in serum. Recently, crocodile blood was developed as food supplement, dried crocodile blood capsule. According to preliminary study of the diabetic patient that consumed crocodile blood capsules showed the decreasing of blood sugar. Therefore, the IGF-1 level of 9 juvenile’s crocodiles in fresh blood and freeze dried blood were examined in this study. These results represented the mean + SE of IGF-1 in crocodile fresh blood and freeze dried blood were 67.28+ 4.79 and 68.24 + 5.13 ng/ml, respectively. The IGF-1 levels in these two forms of blood were not significantly different (p > 0.05). This data suggested that the freeze dried process for dried crocodile blood capsule have no effects on the crocodile blood IGF-1 levels.
